My Reflection: How far have I come?

What do I still need to learn?

Evidence: Proof of my growth

Access to information:  Candidates identify barriers to equitable access to resources and services.

Learned:

*brainstorming list revealed many barriers not previously considered

*during Access Enabler project, realized our solution was potential barrier

*increased awareness: looking with different perspective

*barriers not limited to physical needs (e.g., reading levels, language, AR, etc.)

*multiple arrangements of LMC to best facilitate access

Need to Learn:

*additional strategies for elimination of barriers

Plans:

*LM_NET archives and active discussions

*network of SLMS contacts

Access Enabler

Access to information:  Candidates facilitate access to information in print, non-print, and electronic formats.

Learned:

*access enabler provided strategies for selecting a “just right” book

*learned about changing subject headings when quality items are not circulated

*created bibliography to facilitate access to resources

*cataloged new books during service project to get on shelves

*used LC records to “copy” MARC record into local system

Need to Learn:

*need more experience using cataloging websites

*how does video streaming work? is there a way to make hard copies of video streaming (due to unreliable access to Internet)?; or is it better to only add to catalog?

*when/how to check catalog for accuracy of video streams, websites, etc.

*need to compose master list of reliable websites to provide additional resources for learning community

Plans:

*ask practicing LMS/SLM network

*search Internet for valuable websites

*LM_NET archives and active discussions

Access Enabler

Stimulating learning environment:  Candidates plan and organize library media centers according to their use by the learning community.

Learned: 

*be consistent in cataloging

*make cataloging decisions based on needs of learning community

*refer to Sears for additional subject headings

*designed floor plan for Hartwell Elementary LMC & discussed pros/cons

Need to Learn:

*how to best design LMS floor plan (will come with experience)

Plans:

*Observe LMC layouts during future visits

Hartwell Elementary LMC design

Information literacy curriculum: Candidates incorporate technology to promote efficient and equitable access to information beyond print resources.

Learned:

*basics of Winnebago automation system

*copied MARC records into LMC automation system during service project

*change subject headings to facilitate access

*search PINES for curriculum resources

*include electronic resources in bibliographies

*used LM_NET for ideas for access enabler

Need to Learn:

*need additional practice reading/creating MARC tags/records

*need to learn more about standard subject headings

Plans:

*learn during internship

*ask practicing LMS/SLM network

Access Enabler

Connection with the library community: Candidates demonstrate the potential for establishing connections to other libraries and the larger library community for resource sharing, networking, and procedures.

Learned:

*searched PINES for additional resources for bibliography

*for libraries close, materials from UGA & CMC can be accessed (GIL)

*borrow materials from other schools in district to provide materials for students reading above/below grade level

Need to Learn:

*specific policies for interlibrary loans and turnaround time

*what specifics should I include in my own interlibrary loan policy?

Plans:

*contact local public libraries/UGA to inquire about interlibrary loan policies

*make list of community resources based on curriculum map

Managing information resources: Candidates organize the library media facility and its collections - print, non print, and electronic - according to standard accepted practice.

Learned:

*collections can be organized F, E, Bio, Pbk, etc. and floor plans for such should accommodate

*learned basic cataloging

*learned basics of DDC

*learned basics of MARC records and copying

*Sears available for subject headings

Need to Learn:

*popular Dewey numbers

*how do I change automation system and facility layout if I decide to separate the biography (etc.) section?

Plans:

*familiarity with collection will increase knowledge of popular Dewey numbers (internship)

*consult automation system manual and other LMS using same system

Hartwell Elementary LMC floor plan design

Comprehensive and collaborative strategic planning and assessment: Candidates collaborate with teachers and administrators to develop a library media program plan that aligns resources, services and information literacy standards with the school's goals and objectives.

Learned:

*bibliography in conjunction with curriculum map and collaboration to tie with standards

*get teacher input for purchases specific to content areas taught

*access enabler provides strategies for book selection for independent reading—aligning resources with patrons

Need to Learn:

*need more study in how to tie info literacy to content standards and collaborate with teachers

Plans:

*review GPS/QCC objectives and interview teachers about upcoming units
